Great dialog. This is definitely going to be the part of the basis of Actions 3. I haven't dug deep into things like the contextual menus or editing Actions, but that's part of the plan. In fact, depending on what the scope of the video is, it may be Actions 3 and 4, rather than just 3. I like to keep the lessons very short so they're easy to digest.

BTW Abe, you're correct about the file opening and saving in the same folder despite Batch showing boxingbw. Actions 3 (and/or 4) will correct this. I may also consider looking at Image Processor, since it's built into PS CS3 now.

Oh and finally, if you flatten your image, you might still end up with a PSD. For saving a jpeg back out as a jpeg, you want to have flattened image in 8 bit mode. This isn't a problem when you start with a Jpeg, but if you start with a RAW or TIFF file, then this becomes an issue.

Thanks guys!

Not Max, but yes, you can add to any place in an action you want. Just expand the action (important!) and place the selection (highlight) above where you want to add (so if you want to add at the beginning, highlight the action name).

If you mess up, you can always drag that step to where you want in the action. Handy when you realize you did something backwards.

I don't build "Save As" into my actions as I don't normally batch them, but you could probably put a "Flatten Image" step in there where you get rid of all the layers. The only problem is that if you save with the same name, it may overwrite the original!

Hey Max...great video....I knew i could edit actions which were already made, but I was not sure how...this gave me a better idea and confidence to go to several of my actions and tweak them a little bit more to make them work better...time is money, and my actions is all about saving time.. I do have one a mature question though!!! I noticed that the action saved the original files as PSD files due to the way the B/W actions works and the layers, but can it go all the way to save them as Jpgs or do I have to get another action to grab those PSD files and convert them to JPGs? or did I miss something, because I noticed that at the end you only opened the boxing folder and not the "B/W boxing folder"...
One more question!!! tin this action you added the save as step at the end of the action, but can one add a step to an action, but in the middle of the action, or do I have to start all over and introduce that new step to that action?...
thank you Max!!!

John, I didn't take offense to what you said, nor did I think you meant it that way. You're definitely right that I should mention Save As should be used in a new action (which can be duplicated from a previous action).

I do appreciate the feedback. I'm still new to creating my own videos, and sometimes I take certain things that I am used to for granted.

Thanks!

Max, I wasn't smacking your video, just making a comment: be sure you only put the Save As in the actions you're going to run as a batch.

I look forward to the contextual menus part, as I never got into that with my actions. The most my actions do are apply specific layers, perform specific sharpening, and also apply templates I've developed to a specific file to make some (cheesy) custom product.

John, you are correct in regards to save as, but in this case it's ok because we're creating a new file with save as.

As for using the action in between editing, well you don't need to put in the save as. It's only if you specifically plan to do a batch on the folder. The first post on actions would take care of just performing an action without saving.

The B/W process is just an example. In fact, it's already included in PShizzy Action Set 2. The goal of this video is to get people into the Actions pallete and start playing around.

We've yet to get really into the bigger details of Actions, like fixing errors when creating them, or adding contextual menus, etc. Those will be coming soon.

Nice video, but there's a problem with just using a "Save As" in the action. If the action is to be used inbetween other editing, you'll save when it's not needed. As I don't use "Save As" in an action, I don't know this, but does it automatically do an overwrite if there was a file with that name previously?

If I need to do saving in an action (and often it's of more than one file) I use Dr. Brown's 1-2-3 process (script) located here: http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html

(I noticed that Dr. Brown no longer has the CS2 stuff there, just CS3. I use CS2 still and have the files as well.)
